Introducing the Global Children’s Challenge ™
This year the GCC is
launching a free health initiative for kids all over the world. For every
participant that entered this year’s GCC we are sponsoring one child to join the
Global Children’s Challenge™.
Using the incredible success of the GCC and
with the support of sporting champions Cathy Freeman, Colin Jackson and Herb
Elliott, the Children’s Challenge is a class-based way to make exercise fun and
inclusive for everyone.
All you need to do is download the flyer and pass
it on to teachers or email them the URL (http://www.gccjunior.org/media2/sys/resource/anon/en/Misc/Childrens%20Challenge%20eflyer%20for%20teachers.pdf)
so they can apply for a place in the challenge.
It starts September 29 and
registrations close September 15 so spread the word today.

Inquiry into the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people |
|
Tuesday, 24 August 2010 |
|
The Commissioner
for Children and Young People WA Michelle Scott is conducting an
independent inquiry into the mental health and wellbeing of children and
young people in
Western Australia.
The purpose of
the inquiry is to report on the mental health and wellbeing of children
and young people and make recommendations that provide clear direction
for action on how to strengthen mental health and wellbeing from birth
to adolescence.
The
inquiry will consider the whole spectrum of children and young people’s
mental health needs, including promotion, prevention and intervention
services from the very early years of a child’s life.
Professionals,
government and community organisations and members of the public,
particularly children and young people, are invited to provide
submissions to the inquiry.
Further information can be obtained by following this link.

National Child Protection Week 2010 |
|
Monday, 23 August 2010 |
|
A message from Rosanna Martinello, Chief Executive Officer, NAPCAN
Thank you for your continued support for NAPCAN, National Child Protection
Week and Australia’s children!
This year’s theme – ‘When we know 33,000 children are
abused each year, it’s everyone’s business’ – is one every
section of society can embrace.
How can you support
National Child Protection Week?
Firstly, go to our website – http://www.napcan.org.au/campaigns/child-protection-week
Here you can order a kit that has great posters and stickers for you to use.
Put them up and proudly show your support. You will also find some great web and
email tools and more downloadable resources to help communicate the campaign
message.
Most importantly, at our website, you will find practical tips
on “What can I do to prevent child abuse and neglect?” These tips will help you
become part of the solution to the problem of child abuse and
neglect.
You can also show your support for National Child Protection
Week by holding an event at your workplace or with your friends and family. Make
it a family-friendly event that shines a light on helping families connect with
their community. There is no single solution to preventing child abuse, but a
good start is to get to know your neighbours and show you care.
We
encourage you to register your National Child Protection Week event. To do so,
go to http://www.napcan.org.au/campaigns/register-your-national-child-protection-week-2010-event
Results of the 2009
National Survey
In 2009, NAPCAN conducted Australia’s
largest ever National Survey of community attitudes to child abuse and neglect.
The Survey findings will be launched on 1 September and will be available
here: http://www.preventingchildabuse.com.au
Polly And
Me
We hope you will watch ABC 1 TV on Thursday 9
September at 9.30pm for a very important program. “Kids At Risk” will feature
the screening of a short film, “Polly and Me”, followed by a live studio
discussion. “Polly and Me” depicts the life of an eight-year-old child who could
be living in your street. Its purpose is to help break down the wall of silence
about child abuse and neglect in 21st century Australia. Visit: http://www.pollyandme.com.au/
Thank you for standing alongside NAPCAN during National Child Protection
Week 2010.

No School No Play – Why not More School More Play?
ACHPER has today expressed concern over the ALP choice of the slogan No School No Play in their recently announced policy targeting school truancy.
In
acknowledging that the spirit of the policy reflects educationally
sound intentions, National Executive Director Jeff Emmel expressed
reservations about the negative perception and potential negative impact
on physical activity opportunities for children that could arise if the
issue was not handled properly with care and sensitivity.
