Welcome to the 2012 Thinker in Residence
5 to 15 June
The Commissioner for Children and Young People Michelle Scott
established the Thinker in Residence initiative in 2011 with the
intention to invite an internationally renowned expert to Western
Australia each year for a short residency to focus on an important
public policy issue that affects the wellbeing of children and young
people.
In 2012, the Commissioner is pleased to bring to Perth one of
Canada’s foremost child development specialists, Dr Stuart Shanker, as
the 2012 Thinker in Residence. Read the Commissioner's welcome to the 2012 Thinker in Residence.
Dr Stuart Shanker is Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy and
Psychology at York University and Director of the Milton and Ethel
Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) a state-of-the-art cognitive and
social neuroscience centre at York University, Toronto, Canada.
During his residency, Dr Shanker will examine the importance of
self regulation in children, with a particular focus on strategies that
can be used to develop and enhance self regulation.
The residency will be of interest to parents, health and other
professionals, early childhood practitioners and teachers and others in
the community interested in the wellbeing of children and young people.
