WA Health Education Services

invites you a free Twilight Seminar

Is this normal? Using a traffic lights framework to support the healthy sexual development of children and young people.

Presented by Holly Brennan, Manager, Research and Program Development, Family Planning Queensland (Australia)

“A general lack of knowledge as to what constitutes appropriate behaviours means that many may respond inappropriately to incidents of sexualized behaviours.” O’Brien (2010)

Sexuality is an integral part of a person’s life, yet teachers and other professionals, parents and carers frequently seek guidance about whether sexual behaviours in children and adolescents are ‘normal’. The way adults interpret sexual behaviours impacts on the ways they respond. Family Planning Queensland (FPQ) uses the Traffic Lights as a conceptual framework to assist to support healthy sexual development and to protect children and adolescents from harm or abuse.  Knowing how to identify and respond to sexual behaviours is an essential requirement underpinning adults’ ability and confidence to respond positively. This session will discuss the new book, Is this normal? Understanding your child’s sexual behaviour and the Traffic Lights factsheet which are available to help parents, carers and teachers and other professionals to identify sexual behaviours that may be considered ‘normal’, ‘at risk’ and/or ‘of concern’.
